hey since we’re all admitting that the Sherlock fandom has gone to shit
let me just give my personal anxiety about stuff
When I first got into it, it was all giggles and laughs and fun fun fun. There didn’t seem to be anyone yelling about how the crack has gone too far because it was only some jokes then. I don’t know where it escalated to the point of the emergence of “fandom elitists” and people going about and blogging pictures of Martin Freeman’s children and links to NSFW fanfics and art.
Frankly, I don’t know what to make of this anymore. I miss the days when someone could make a ridiculous joke or use a quote from the show without someone telling them they are being stupid. I miss the days when someone could make a joke and no one would take it and use it and run it into the ground to the point of planting a tree of obnoxiousness. I see people hating eachother and telling people to die of all things. It’s horrible and cruel and downright disgusting behavior.
There are so many things to love. The glorious art and fanfiction. The genuine discussions and theories. The insight, the depth, the very fuckind show itself etc. However, I feel like what started out as a great big family of kooky, but tolerable, talented individuals has turned into an angry, bitter, segregated class of bullies.
The whole ‘fandom elitist’ movement is where I started to realize that things will never be the same again in this fandom. I do believe that in some sense that they are right and often they make very good and valid points. However, it what started out as satire has turned into bullying and resentment for people on all sides of the coin. Everyone who attempts to make a move or try to make a joke is either shot down or the joke is taken and blown up to proportions of out of control lunacy.
This fandom is segregated to people who hate it, people who love it, people who take it too far, and people who want to love it but can bear to.
Let’s all admit it. We’ve all laughed at a ridiculous fandom meme at some point and we’ve all read an angry rant about the fandom and agreed.
Sometimes I can’t even stand my own url. I do adore it to some level. It’s a subtle silliness that Sherlock fans would recognize. I created it during the Golden Age of the fandom where “Martin Freeman is made of kittens and hedgehogs” was just a simple joke that only used now and again because there was a large selection of jokes to choose from and creativity and adoration was flowing from everywhere. However, the resentment I have for the fandom has grown to the point where I am afraid to interact with artists and new people because I don’t want to seem like I’m just another person who takes in the crack by the truckloads and spurts single-minded answers.
I have other interests, you know. Despite the diversity I try to have, I’m always dragged down and thought of negatively just for being a fan of something and enjoying the occasional joke. Crack can be funny sometimes. It’s just when you take it an mix in some bitter rivalry and fucking rudeness and then shove it down my fucking throat, it’s not quite funny anymore.
We are all human beings. No one has the right to tell someone they are less of a person for not shipping this or that. No one has the right to pester the creators and actors with porn or invade their privacy. A joke is joke and nothing more. Remember that we are people who just want to enjoy something marvelous. Step back and think about it.
I’m not attacking you for thinking that Martin Freeman is made of hedgehogs. I’m not attacking you for disliking the running gag of Martin Freeman being made of hedgehogs. Enjoy what you will and let others enjoy what they will.
I am not fandom. I am a fan.
